The vote was unanimous, and new Chair Kevin Warsh made the reasoning plain afterward: inflation, in his words, "is still too high." If you'd been assuming the easing cycle from the past couple of years would keep running, this resets that assumption directly — for savings yields, for financing anything, and for how risk assets get priced from here.
The move followed a hotter-than-expected August CPI report and a surprisingly strong jobs number — payrolls up 162,000, unemployment holding at 4.1%. Strong labor data gave the Fed cover to keep leaning against inflation instead of easing off.
Trump pushed back publicly, saying he still has "confidence" in Warsh but wants rates at "1% or lower" — reviving the Fed-independence question at a moment the central bank is already navigating sticky inflation. A public fight between the White House and the Fed is its own source of market volatility, layered on top of the rate move itself. Worth watching closely over the next few weeks.

Nvidia Buys Hugging Face for $13 Billion

Wall Street's New AI Accounting Trick Has Debt Investors Nervous
Companies are now baking projected future AI-driven cost savings directly into the EBITDA figures used to market leveraged loans and bonds. It's the latest in a string of adjustments that credit investors say quietly inflates reported profitability and understates real leverage — savings that haven't happened yet, counted as if they already had.

Paramount's Warner Bros. Discovery Deal Still Isn't Done

A Self-Driving Startup's New Pitch: Rent the Software, Skip the Fleet
May Mobility is going public by merging with a SPAC backed by Atlas Credit Partners, at a $1.4 billion enterprise value and up to $337 million in expected proceeds. Toyota, Uber, and Lyft are partners; shares are expected to trade on Nasdaq as "MAY" by year-end.
The real story is the pivot underneath the listing: May is moving away from owning and operating its own robotaxi fleets and toward licensing its self-driving software to others — an "Autonomy-as-a-Service" model. With roughly $10 million in 2025 revenue and about $93 million in annual cash burn, it's a bet that being the arms dealer beats being the operator in a brutally capital-intensive category.

Milwaukee has already wrapped up a fourth straight NL Central crown with the best record in baseball, and Atlanta is closing in on the NL East. The Cubs, Phillies and Padres currently hold all three NL Wild Card spots, separated by about 2 games, while the Arizona Diamondbacks sit at 80-73, 3.5 games back of the last spot with about 9 games left.
The real drama is that last Wild Card berth: the Diamondbacks need to win almost everything left just to force the issue before the regular season closes out.
